Why do radioactive elements decay?

The atoms of a radioactive element decay because their nuclei are unstable. At known intervals (from millionths of a second to billions of years), a radioactive atom will eject an electron, a neutron, or a quantum of energy. The time and type of decay depends on the type of atom.
