My applications aren't opening!?!!?

I have this mac computer... And I'm trying to open some of my applications, but they just bounce once (like a genie effect?) but don't open!! It does this with Microsoft word, Imvu and Photo booth. What is up with my computer and how can I fix it? I'm really confused!!
