Why aren't environmentalists considered conservative...?

Conserving and conservatism are two very different words with very different meanings despite the apparent similarity. Environmentalists are actually trying to "protect" the environment. An effort that requires standing up against the heavily funded corporations (read conservatives) that want to reap the profits that come from decimating it into extinction.
